GJ Crowd Forecasting Site

Privacy Policy

Last updated: August 30, 2015

The Good Judgment (“GJ”) Crowd Forecasting Site at www.goodjudgmentproject.com allows you to make and score your own forecasts publicly on future events. It also shares your forecasts and rationales with other users (the crowd), to enable the crowd and GJ to make the best possible aggregate forecast to inform the world.

This Privacy Policy describes our policies and procedures on the collection, use and disclosure of your information when you sign up, view or use the GJ Crowd Forecasting Site (the “Services”), via the GJ website or your mobile phone. Irrespective of which country you reside in or supply information from, you authorize GJ to use your information in the United States, and any other country where GJ operates.

1. Information Collection and Use

A. Basic Account Information: When you create or reconfigure an account for the Services, you will be asked to provide some personal information, such as your username, password, and email address.

You will be primarily identified on the Services by your username. Your username will be publicly displayed on your profile page and in search results, as well as publicly associated with your forecasting activity.

B. Additional Profile Information: When you sign up, we may also ask you for some optional information, such as your first and last name, whether you previously participated as part of the Good Judgment Project research project in the ACE Tournament and some associated questions. In addition, you may voluntarily provide information about yourself on your user profile page, such as a tagline, your professional affiliation, a picture, an avatar, your location, connections to your blog or social media accounts, your areas of interest or expertise.

You may choose to do so to help others assess your interests, accuracy, expertise, credibility and ultimately your forecasts, and whether or not to follow you or upvote your answers. You understand that Services is enabling a public, crowd forecasting process, in which any relevant information could be helpful to inform the crowd. Therefore all of this profile information that you provide the Services Service should by default be public information.

In some cases, such information will also be requested to help us better analyze the forecasts and rationales that you submit. In such cases, there will be a check-box of whether you want us to display the information on your profile page or to keep it hidden. With respect to those questions, if you do not want the answer to be displayed on your profile page, please check the box.

We may use any information you voluntarily provide about yourself (whether or not you check the box to keep it hidden on your profile page) to improve the feedback we provide you on your forecasting accuracy and to customize the content we show you. Such information may be used as part of our aggregation algorithms to provide our best summary or aggregate answers to the forecasting questions. We may also use such information to improve our aggregation algorithms and other functionality of the Services, as well as to conduct research into the science of the crowd forecasting.

C. Your email address: We may use your email address to send you information about the Services (including notices required by law, in lieu of postal mail). You can control receipt of certain emails from us via settings on the GJ site. We also use your email address to load your avatar image onto the Services from gravatar.com. We may use your contact information to send you marketing email messages. If you do not want to receive such messages, you may opt out by following the instructions in the message. If you correspond with us by email, we may retain the content of your email messages, your email address and our responses.

D. Forecasts and Rationales, Scores, Following Activity, Upvotes and other Forecasting Activity, and your Profile Page

Our Services are primarily designed to surface accurate forecasts about future events and to share them with the world. You help us do so by providing us your forecasts and rationales in response to our questions. You also do so by following users that you find informative and upvoting other users’ forecasts. Such contributions and metadata about them (such as when you posted them) are publicly viewable on the Service, along with your username. Information that you post as your rationale for forecasts, even if they identify yourself or others, may be viewable all around the world instantly. So please exercise your discretion in what you choose to post.

As part of the GJ methodology, your forecasts will be scored, and your scores will also be publicly viewable on the Services through your public user profile page to provide feedback to you and others about your forecasting.

E. Links: We may keep track of how you interact with links on the Services and in email, by redirecting clicks or through other means. We do this to help improve our Services, to share aggregate click statistics, and to surface the most relevant links contributed by the crowd in the forecasting process to inform our users, our aggregation algorithms and to share with the world.

F. Information Collected Automatically: In providing the Services, we use persistent and session cookies and other tracking technologies to: (i) store your username and password; (ii) analyze the usage of the Service; (iii) customize the Services to your preferences; and (iv) control advertising displayed by the Service, if any. A persistent cookie remains on your computer after you close your browser so that it can be used by your browser on subsequent visits to the Service. Persistent cookies can be removed by following your web browser's directions. A session cookie is temporary and disappears after you close your browser. You can set your web browser to refuse all cookies or to indicate when a cookie is being sent. However, some features of the Services may not function properly if you disable cookie functionality.

We may also use other Internet technologies, log files, clear GIFs, Flash technologies, and other similar technologies, to deliver or communicate with cookies and track your use of the Service. We also may include clear GIFs in HTML-based emails sent to our users to determine whether the message has been opened. As we adopt additional technology, we may also gather additional information through other methods.

We use these automated technologies to collect and analyze certain types of information we consider to be non-personal information, including: (i) information related to the devices or browsers you use to access or interact with the Service, such as: IP addresses, geolocation information, unique device identifiers and other information about your mobile phone or other mobile device(s), browser types, browser language, and unique numbers or codes in cookies; and (ii) information related to the ways in which you interact with the Services, such as: referring and exit pages and URLs, platform type, the number of clicks, domain names, landing pages, pages viewed and the order of those pages, the amount of time spent on particular pages, the date and time you used the Services, and other similar information. We may also capture other data, such as search criteria and results.

GJ may allow third parties to serve advertisements on the Services and on third-party services and use other third parties to help us collect and analyze information about your use of the service, generate aggregate site usage statistics and provide content sharing services to support the Services. These third parties may also use cookies and similar technologies to collect similar non-personal information about your use of the Service. GJ does not control the third parties' use of such technologies and their use is governed by those parties' privacy and opt-out policies.

GJ uses the information we collect automatically to analyze how the Services are used, diagnose Services or technical problems, maintain security, personalize content, remember information to help you efficiently access your account, monitor aggregate metrics such as total number of visitors, traffic, and demographic patterns, and to comply with applicable laws.

2. How We Share Your Information

A. With Your Consent: We may share or disclose your information with your consent. As described above, we do not consider forecasts and rationales, scores, following activity, upvotes or forecasting activity to be private information. In addition, we don’t consider any information that is publicly viewable on your user profile page to be private information. Whenever you voluntarily disclose personal information on publicly-viewable web pages, that information will be publicly available and can be collected and used by others. You understand such information is intended to be shared with the GJ community and GJ sponsors, including the metadata associated with them. Your forecasting activity and scores will be associated with your username, and will be publicly viewable on your user profile page. You may elect to make certain profile information non-public by adjusting the settings on your GJ account. When you change your account settings from public to private, we will honor your requested settings as of the date such change is made. When you make information private that was once available publicly on the Services, you understand that such information may have been previously shared with a third party, as described in this Privacy Policy.

Any information displayed on your profile page may be searched by search engines, provided to GJ sponsors, and may be republished elsewhere on the Web or through media outlets in accordance with our Terms of Service, available at www.goodjudgmentproject.com/terms-of-service.

We may share the aggregated answers, your individual answers, your forecasting activity, your public profile pages and our insights, improvements or research about the crowd forecasting process, as well as associated supporting data, with GJ’s sponsors or partners as part of our research or our collaboration with them.

B. Services Providers: We engage service providers to perform functions and provide services, such as analytics services and hosting services, to us in the United States and other countries. We may share your private personal information with such service providers subject to obligations consistent with this Privacy Policy and any other appropriate confidentiality and security measures, and on the condition that the third parties use your private personal data only on our behalf and pursuant to our instructions.

C. Sponsors and Affiliates: In addition, certain forecasting competitions on the Services (known as Challenges) may be offered to you together with third party sponsors. In such cases, we may share your personally identifiable information, such as your email address, with such third-party sponsors as part of providing them the forecast data from the Challenge, and to enable them to contact you to follow up on your participation in the challenge. If we do so, such third parties' use of your information will be bound by this Privacy Policy.

D. Third Party Ads: GJ may allow third-party ad servers or ad networks to serve advertisements on the Services and on third-party services. These third-party ad servers or ad networks use technology to send, directly to your browser, the advertisements and links that appear on GJ. They automatically receive your IP address when this happens. They may also use other technologies (such as cookies, JavaScript, or web beacons) to measure the effectiveness of their advertisements and to personalize the advertising content. GJ does not provide any personally identifiable information to these third-party ad servers or ad networks without your consent. However, please note that if an advertiser asks GJ to show an advertisement to a certain audience and you respond to that advertisement, the advertiser or ad server may conclude that you fit the description of the audience they are trying to reach. The GJ Privacy Policy does not apply to, and we cannot control the activities of, third-party advertisers. Please consult the respective privacy policies of such advertisers for more information.

E. Business Transfers: In the event that GJ is involved in a bankruptcy, merger, acquisition, reorganization or sale of assets, your information may be sold or transferred as part of that transaction. This Privacy Policy will apply to your information as transferred to the new entity. We may also disclose information about you to our corporate affiliates in order to help provide, understand, and improve our Services and our affiliates services including delivery of ads.

F. Law and Harm: GJ may disclose your personal information if required to do so by law or subpoena or if we believe that it is reasonably necessary to comply with a law, regulation or legal request; to protect the safety of any person; to address fraud, security or technical issues; or to protect GJ's rights or property.

G. Non-Personally Identifiable Information: We may aggregate and/or anonymize information collected through the Services so that the information does not identify you. We may use aggregated, anonymized, or other non-personally identifiable information for any purpose, including for research and marketing purposes, and our use and disclosure of such information is not subject to any restrictions under this Privacy Policy.

3. How We Protect Your Information

GJ uses commercially reasonable physical, managerial, and technical safeguards to preserve the integrity and security of your personal information. We cannot, however, ensure or warrant the security of any information you transmit to GJ or guarantee that your information on the Services may not be accessed, disclosed, altered, or destroyed by breach of any of our physical, technical, or managerial safeguards.

In the event that personal information is compromised as a result of a breach of security, GJ will promptly notify those persons whose personal information has been compromised as required by applicable law.

4. Your Choices About Your Information

If you do not want your name to be publicly displayed, you can leave it blank and choose to be pseudo-anonymous. However, please note that if you provide additional information on your user profile page, such links to your blog or your social media accounts, your name may be inferred or accessible through the other displayed information on your user profile page, or through other information displayed on the site.

You may also decline to submit any requested personally identifiable information through the Services, but as a result GJ may not be able to provide certain features of the Services to you. You may, modify, update or correct your account information, certain opt-in/opt-out preferences, and email preferences by logging in to your account.

5. Children's Privacy

The GJ Crowd Forecasting Site is not intended for use by children under the age of 13. GJ does not knowingly collect or solicit personal information from anyone under the age of 13 or knowingly allow such persons to register with the Service. If we become aware that we have collected personal information from a child under age 13 without verification of parental consent, we will take steps to remove that information.

6. California Privacy Rights

Pursuant to California Civil Code Section 1798.83, residents of the State of California have the right to request from companies conducting business in California certain information regarding GJ’s disclosure within the immediately preceding calendar year of that California resident’s personal information to third parties (and in some cases affiliates) for their direct marketing purposes. Alternatively, the law provides that a company may comply, as GJ does, by disclosing in its privacy policy that it provides consumers choice (opt-out or opt-in) regarding sharing personal information with third parties and affiliates for those third parties’ and affiliates’ direct marketing purposes, and information on how to exercise that choice.

At this time, we do not share private, personally identifiable information with third parties or affiliates for those third parties’ or affiliates’ direct marketing purposes. If we do so in the future, GJ will provide you with a choice prior to sharing your private, personally identifiable information with third parties and affiliates for their direct marketing purposes. If you do not opt-in or if you choose to opt-out at the time GJ offers that choice, GJ will not share your information with that identified third party or affiliate for its direct marketing purposes.

Please note that the foregoing does not apply to your forecasts, rationales, scores, following activity, upvotes and other forecasting activity or user profile page information which, as described above, we do not consider personal information and are publicly viewable by any user of the Service.

We are not responsible for the practices employed by websites linked to or from the Services, nor the information or content contained therein. Please remember that when you use a link to go from the Services to another website, our Privacy Policy is no longer in effect. Your browsing and interaction on any other website, including those that have a link on our website, is subject to that website's own rules and policies.

8. Changes to Our Privacy Policy

We may revise this Privacy Policy from time to time. The most current version of the policy will always be available at www.goodjudgmentproject.com/privacy and will govern our use of your information. If we make a change to this policy that, in our sole discretion, is material, we will notify you via an email to the email address associated with your account or via posting a notice on the site in advance for a reasonable number of days before the changes take effect. By continuing to access or use the Services after those changes become effective, you agree to be bound by the revised Privacy Policy.
